The Kimberley Colts team has secured a third-place finish from the WA Country Football Championships after mounting a competitive campaign.
Taking place in Perth over two days from July 9-10, the Kimberley side suffered a loss in their first game against Great Southern Storm at Guildford Grammar on Thursday, 6.4 (40) to 3.5 (23).
But the team managed to make a comeback in their second showing of the championships taking down the West Pilbara Pythons by five points, 4.5 (29) to 3.6 (24).
In their final game on the Thursday the Kimberley Colts suffered another loss to the Mortlock Avon Colts, but only by three points, setting the stage for another showdown with the side the following day at Scotch College. The final score was 5.4 (34) to 4.7 (31).
In the final match for the Kimberley in the competition, Beau Vellios opened the scoring for Mortlock/Avon Colts, but the Kimberley quickly asserted dominance with two goals from Carl Rex and two from Kevin Long Jr to secure a solid first-quarter lead, 4.1 (25) to 2.0 (12).
Kimberley extended their advantage in the second term as Jock Mosquito found the big sticks and Linden Dickens slammed home two consecutive goals, while Mortlock/Avon were held to just two behinds.
Mortlock Avon showed signs of life early in the third with goals from Reagan Mills and Hughes. But Kimberley answered back with second goals for Rex and Long Jr alongside majors from Elwood Wade and Long Jr’s third of the match to put their side up by 43 points at the last change.
Mosquito added another goal for Kimberley to start the final quarter before Mortlock Avon mounted a late fightback driven by goals from Vellios, Hughes, and a final late major, though it wasn’t enough to bridge the gap with the Kimberley coming away with a 27-point win, 12.6 (78) to 8.7 (55).
The Kimberley’s Long Jr led the goal-scoring for the match with four goals followed by Rex with three.
Mosquito and Kye Pindan were also named CBH Colts Championship All Stars for their sensational performances over the two days of competition.
