The eyes of the AFL world will be on Collingwood and West Coast this weekend, and one of the staunchest Victorian fans going around has jumped on the Eagles bandwagon.

Pies champion Scott Pendlebury will notch game 433 at the MCG on Saturday, breaking Brent Harvey’s record for most AFL games played.

And Collingwood have ensured there will be a show for the event, with Pendlebury to wear a gold number in front of a crowd expected to exceed 90,000.

However, not every football supporter has been pleased by the dog and pony show laid on for the 38-year-old.

Staunch Richmond fan Mick Molloy even used a segment of Channel 7’s The Front Bar to implore the Eagles to spoil the day with a victory.

“There’s a window of opportunity here for a team to cover themselves in greatness. I’m talking to you, West Coast Eagles,” he said.

“A lot of responsibility rests on you. On behalf of all the other teams in the league, you have a chance to derail a very big moment for the Collingwood football club.

“You can do this. If you were to beat Collingwood on the MCG and puncture the biggest balloon in the history of AFL, you would have the unqualified love of every other team in the competition forever and beyond. It’s your chance.”

The popular comedian, by then draped in two Eagle scarves, drew on the famous 2018 grand final-winning goal from retired midfielder Dom Sheed to inspire the young team.

“Think of Dom Sheed,” he said.

“Channel Dom Sheed. What did Dom Sheed do to Collingwood? He tore them apart. He broke their hearts.

“This is a golden opportunity. I beg you. You can do this, West Coast, it all comes down to you.”

He finished by declaring West Coast, who are known as Waalitij Marawar for Sir Doug Nicholls round, his second club.

The Front Bar crew took another shot at the occasion, building up a segment to appear as if they would celebrate Pendlebury only to cheer on Fremantle, who have adopted the name Walyalup for Sir Doug Nicholls Round, midfielder Neil Erasmus’ 50th AFL game.

West Coast youngster Harley Reid will also notch his 50th in the same contest as Pendlebury breaks the record, which has also drawn plenty of tongue-in-cheek responses.
