Kimberley floods: Bare supermarket shelves in Broome but trucks are on the way

Shocking photographs have highlighted supply chain issues in the north of the State following devastating flooding. Pictures taken by The West Australian photographer Simon Santi in Broome Coles show shelves empty of toilet paper, fresh fruit, vegetables and meat. A photo published to WA Incident alerts taken in Woolworths showed a similar situation. The Great Northern Highway south of Broome has been partially reopened, but access is restricted to the delivery of essential supplies. Drone footage taken by 7News cameraman Simon Hydzik revealed the conditions drivers are having to combat to bring goods into Broome supermarkets. A barge carrying groceries is expected to arrive in Broome on Wednesday. A local also posted a photo of trucks lined up at Sandfire Roadhouse in between Broome and Port Hedland to the Broome Community Noticeboard. However, some locals were more concerned about stocking the bottleshops, with one remarking that they hoped the alcohol trucks would be let through first. A Coles spokesperson said they were working closely with their supply chain and governments to minimise impacts. “Where road travel has been impacted, we are using rail and sea freight to deliver essential groceries to the communities of Kununurra and Broome,” they said. Fitzroy Crossing continues to rely on deliveries by air.
