Tyler The Creator put on an energetic and entertaining concert in his “favourite” Australian city on Thursday night, where he also revealed his love for an iconic Aussie sweet.

The 34-year-old rapper and singer from California has been travelling Australia on his Chromakopia tour where he has been performing hits from his 2024 album and this year’s album Don’t Tap The Glass.

Ending his campaign in Perth with two shows — marking his return to WA since 2022 — Tyler put on an incredible display of artistry which showcased his quirky personality.

Appearing on the raised stage of green shipping containers just before 9.30pm, Tyler burst into song accompanied by firework-sounding pyrotechnics and impressive lights.

Nursing a “popped shoulder” that happened early into the show, Tyler said he was going to “be more chill” throughout the night but it didn’t stop him from pulling out his signature dance grooves that at times could be likened to the late Michael Jackson.

His facial expressions were also at times demonic-like and he cackled into the microphone.

While taking a break from jumping around the stage — the sweat visibly dripped off him — he took a moment to talk about Perth being his favourite city in Australia.

“What’s good? It’s been a while, how we going?” He told his thousands of fans.

“I’m happy to be back in my favourite part of Australia tonight.

“Don’t be afraid to sing along.”

He also revealed he had been enjoying snacking on Golden Gaytime icecreams.

“I don’t know what flavour them things are, but I suck those things down boi,” he said, as the crowd erupted into cheer.

Some of his hit songs from the night included Sugar On My Tongue, St. Chroma, Sticky, Earfquake, Noid, Judge Judy, Are We Still Friends?, New Magic Wand, Who Dat Boy and Like Him.

Of the latter he said: “It’s such a great song but it almost didn’t make the album.”

Not only was Tyler’s dancing, singing and rapping a stunning show of talent, his ability to connect with fans during brief moments with humour was very entertaining.

Tyler certainly took his fans of all ages through his musical journey and they lapped up every second of it.

Before he wrapped up the show, Tyler with a message of appreciation.

“Not being from this side of the earth and to come here and do shows really means a lot to us,” he said.

“Thank you to the parents and friends as plus ones who don’t give a f*** who’s on stage and thank you to the folks who have supported me for the longest.

At one point in time I was banned from coming here so the fact I can come back and do multiple shows means so much.”

His comments of being banned referred to when he cancelled his 2015 Australian tour due to controversy surrounding a campaign by feminist group Collective Shout, who called for the Australian government to deny him a visa.

Collective Shout launched a petition to immigration minister Peter Dutton, based on their objections to Tyler’s lyrics that included references to rape and violence against women.

Tyler was supported by Paris Texas and Lil Yachty.

Tyler, The Creator is set to perform a second night at RAC Arena on Friday.

The verdict:

4/5 stars
