AFL: What deals will get done today?
It was a busy opening day of the trade period, with Zach Merrett’s shift from Essendon to Hawthorn headlining player action that included mooted moves for Jesse Hogan and Scott Pendlebury.
But there’s plenty up in the air as we get into the swing of the week on Day 2.
Stick with us throughout the day as we take you through all the news and developments!
More from Graham
Graham is asked about his playing career, which spanned 37 games and famously included 24 games in West Coast’s 2006 premiership season before missing out on a grand final berth.
The coach says his resilience and the fact he didn’t have a 300-game career has helped shape him as a person, a connector, and someone who can relate to a wide range of players on the list.
“My experiences previously give me diversity as a coach,” he says.
“It helps you connect, helps you show empathy when you need to.”
Graham fronting the media
Jaymie Graham is talking at his introductory press conference after being locked in as North Melbourne’s new coach.
He says he’s looking forward to building relationships with players, and has a message for the fans: “I hope what we produce in 2027 will make you proud.”
Graham describes his coaching style as a a “relationship builder” and wants to create an environment that supports players but challenges them.
“I’m genuinely excited, nervous, proud... I feel like I’ve landed in the right place,” he says.
“There’s no ceiling on where we want to get to... there’s clearly some talent on this list but also some improving to do.”
Cornes’ Miers expectation
Eagles list boss Matt Clarke yesterday deemed it “unlikely” that Gryan Miers will get to the club this trade period.
But AFL analyst Kane Cornes disagrees, saying the clues appeared to point to a Cats exit.
“I personally would be surprised if he’s at Geelong,” Cornes said on Tuesday.
“As much as he says that he wants to stay at Geelong and his management says that... if that was the case, he’s not doing a medical.
“If West Coast came with a life-changing deal in terms of tenure and security that Gryan would probably be happy to receive given he’s got half an ACL in his leg ... I would think he goes.”
Duursma deal looming
One of the Roos players Jaymie Graham likely won’t get a chance to coach is Zane Duursma, who is set to make a move to Melbourne.
There’s reports that the Demons are offering Pick 47 or a second-round selection in either this year’s draft or next year’s draft to bring in the 21-year-old.
Duursma has played 38 games across three seasons at the Roos.
Graham speaks
While we wait for some fresh trade developments, here’s what Jaymie Graham had to say about his “perfect fit” opportunity at the Roos!
Triple treat
Having already coached West Coast and Fremantle - filling in for Adam Simpson in one match in 2018, and covering for Justin Longmuir in two matches in 2022 - Graham will become just the third man to coach three different clubs in the AFL era.
The other two? Brett Ratten, who had permanent stints at Carlton and St Kilda before leading the Roos in 10 games in 2023 while Alastair Clarkson was absent, and Rodney Eade, who led Sydney, the Western Bulldogs, and Gold Coast.
Freo respond to Graham news
North’s coaching move leaves Fremantle with some reshuffling to do in the box, but the club is thrilled to see Graham get his chance.
“We can’t thank Jaymie enough for his five outstanding seasons of service to our club,” Dockers footy manager Joe Brierty said.
“Ever since he set foot in the door, he has been a highly valued member of our coaching department and respected by all players and football staff.
“Jaymie has had a significant impact not only on our player group - but the entire football department and broader club.
“It is well documented that Jaymie has had ambitions of becoming a senior coach in his own right one day, and we couldn’t be prouder or happier for him to take an opportunity he’s worked so hard for.”
The Dockers have also lost Adam Read and Todd Curley from this year’s broader coaching staff.
LOCKED IN: Graham is North Melbourne’s coach!
It’s now been confirmed that Jaymie Graham is officially the Roos’ new man, on a three-year deal.
Graham has “the exact kind of grit we value at North Melbourne”, according to North president Sonja Hood in a letter to members.
“As a coach, Jaymie is a process-driven leader with a quiet, grounded presence, sharp attention to detail, and a clear football vision,” she wrote.
“Outside of his exceptional character, he joins us with a proven skill set. He played a key role in West Coast’s 2018 premiership success, and more recently he was the line coach for one of the competition’s best forward lines at Fremantle as part of a high-performing program.
He is widely respected across the industry as a developer of talent and a connector of people - someone who builds strong player relationships instantly and earns respect through his actions.”
Cats up ante on Ridley
The biggest news to start our day is Geelong’s increased offer for Jordan Ridley.
The Cats are prepared to give up a future first-round pick, another later future pick, and Jack Bowes, according to Seven’s Tom Morris.
Perennial contenders Geelong are eyeing a massive trade period, with Ridley alongside Toby Greene and Rowan Marshall as three considerable names they’re looking to bring in after this year’s semifinal exit.
