Coca-Cola temporarily stops extracting groundwater from Perth Hills for Mount Franklin bottles

Coca-Cola has temporarily stopped extracting groundwater from the Perth Hills, after it emerged the drinks giant was taking tens of thousands of litres a week from the site for free. For decades, the company has been allowed to take 10 trucks carrying 28,000 litres of water from a bore on unproclaimed land in Karragullen, which it then uses for its Mount Franklin bottles. The status of the land, on Irymple Road, means no water licence or associated fees apply. After public outrage, especially from nearby orchardists concerned about Coca-Cola’s water use in a drying climate, Water Minister Simone McGurk called a meeting with the company to demand an explanation. That led scientists at the Department of Water and Environmental Regulation to review the company’s water use. A Coca-Cola Europacific Partners spokesperson revealed that, in response to community concern, it had “conducted an additional independent sustainability review of the Karragullen site”. The company claimed the report, which it received on May 15, found its operations were having no impact on neighbouring properties and that there were no recommendations to stop taking water. But it said it would nevertheless pause its operations. “Based on current and predicted rainfall, measured water table levels compared to historical fluctuations and our sustainable water management framework, we are voluntarily ceasing water extraction at Karragullen until we see the aquifer replenishment return to an appropriate level,” the spokesperson said. “While CCEP’s groundwater extraction in the local catchment is minor in comparison to other users, we acknowledge the dry conditions the region is currently experiencing, and we are committed to doing what we can to reduce our environmental impact.” Ms McGurk said she was pleased, given the recent dry conditions, that Coke had given her a commitment that they would voluntarily stop extraction at Karragullen “for the time being – to support groundwater replenishment at this site”. “I think we can all agree our water resources are precious – we’ve all seen the impacts of climate change in our State over these last few months,” she said. “The extraction of water from Perth’s hills for bottling has come as to a surprise to many people across WA. Rightly, people are asking questions – as am I.” The State Government is implementing a raft of measures to increase water monitoring such as meters to be installed at bores used by spring bottling companies — the data from which will be independently analysed and audited. An interactive maps showing how many companies were taking water and the total water being taken in real time will be up and running soon, with WA to also be the first State to release an Annual Water Report that summarises spring water bottling company operations and tracks groundwater use.
