Residents in parts of the Kimberley region in WA’s north have been told to “take action” as flooding is expected to close a major highway.

The Department of Fire and Emergency Services warns that Great Northern Highway is expected to close on Monday east of Fitzroy Crossing after a flood warning was upgraded.

The popular tourist and four-wheel-driving thoroughfare Gibb River Road was forced to close on Sunday.

Drivers have been told to beware of potential flash flooding between Fitzroy Crossing and Wyndham on the Great Northern Highway.

As well as the Victoria Highway between the Great Northern Highway and WA’s border with the Northern Territory.

DFES said heavy rainfall over recent days has raised river levels along the upper Fitzroy River, as well as the Margaret and Leopold Rivers.

“These floodwaters are expected to reach Fitzroy Crossing during Sunday night, where minor flooding is likely,” they said.

“Minor flooding is possible at Noonkanbah starting Monday evening.”

Rainfall totals of up to 70mm over the past 24 hours to 9am on Sunday were recorded, while further showers and storms have been forecast.

DFES are closely monitoring the situation in conjunction with local authorities.
