Jack Robinson returns to site of Olympic Games medal for final event of WSL Championship Tour regular season

Margaret River’s Jack Robinson’s dreams of breaking through for his first world championship in 2025 will be determined at the site of his Olympic Games silver medal. Robinson is ranked at No.8 in the world ahead of the upcoming Tahiti Pro, which will be the final event of the World Surf League Championship Tour regular season. He will need to break into the top five in order to progress to the tour’s finals at the world-famous Cloudbreak in Fiji later this month, where the winner will be crowned world champion. But he will draw great confidence from being back at the Teahupo’o surf break, where he last year waged a brilliant Olympic campaign which included victories over legends John John Florence and Gabriel Medina, who have combined for five world championships. Robinson, the most recent South Western Times AJ “Tood” Buswell Sports Star of the Year Award winner, will likely need both a strong showing and for other results to break his way to find his way into the top five. He sits on 37,545 points for the season, only marginally behind No.7-ranked Filipe Toledo (38,760) but further adrift of No.6 Griffin Colapinto (41,165) and Australian No.5 Ethan Ewing (41,885), both of which will likely need to make early exits for Robinson to progress. Surfers earn 10,000 points for winning an event, with a second-placed finish rewarding 7800 points and exiting at the semifinals resulting in 6085 points. Robinson has qualified for the one-day, winner-takes-all finals — which will be scrapped next year under a revised post-season format — in each of the last three years but has endured a more uneven 2025 season, where he won the Bells Beach Pro but has also failed to make the top 16 in four events. He has drawn Hawaii’s Barron Miyama and Frenchman Marco Mignot in his opening round heat, which is slated to be the eighth and final one. A first call on the Tahiti Pro will be made at 1am Friday morning WA time.
