Trigg Beach: 12-year-old girl dies in hospital nearly two days after being found unresponsive in water

A 12-year-old girl has died in hospital nearly two days after being found unresponsive in the water at Trigg Beach. WA Police confirmed the young girl died in Perth Children’s Hospital in the early hours of Christmas morning. The incident unfolded in front of horrified beachgoers when two 12-year-old girls were caught in a rip and pulled out to sea about 6.30pm on Tuesday. “One of the girls was rescued by a surfer and safely brought back to shore,” a police spokesperson said. “The second girl was located unresponsive in the water by the same surfer and brought to shore where police, volunteer lifeguards and two off-duty doctors commenced CPR.” Surf Life Saving WA general manager Chris Peck said members of the Trigg Island Surf Life Saving Club were training on the beach at the time of the incident. “A member of the public alerted the lifesavers, who were training, of an incident,” he said on Wednesday. “They (the lifesavers) were able to come up to the surf club, they got their equipment, being the rescue boards, the ATVs, the oxygen equipment. “They went out and recovered that person, brought them back to shore, and immediately applied CPR.” The tragedy is the sixth fatal drowning in Western Australia this summer, according to Royal Life Saving Australia. Royal Life Saving WA chief executive Peter Leaversuch pleaded with swimmers to stay vigilant this festive season. “We’re so lucky to have a broad coastline, but the challenges are around the fact that sometimes the benign conditions don’t really tell the full story,” he said. “The conditions can change quite quickly. . . the winds can actually take you further from shore, rather than to shore, or there’s a current that takes you from where you started to a slightly more perilous position. “Just be cautious, know your limits and watch out.”
