NSW Police Inspector Amy Scott, hero of 2024 Bondi Junction attack, diagnosed with aggressive breast cancer

A senior NSW police officer celebrated for her extraordinary bravery is now facing a very different fight after being diagnosed with a rare and aggressive form of breast cancer. Inspector Amy Scott VA, a 19-year veteran of the NSW Police Force and a 2025 NSW Australian of the Year nominee, is the focus of a growing community fundraiser launched by NSW Police Legacy. Joel Cauchi killed six people and injured 10 during a stabbing rampage at the Westfield Bondi Junction shopping centre in Sydney’s east on April 13, 2024. Inspector Scott, working alone, shot Cauchi dead during the incident and is credited with saving multiple lives as a result. In an appeal shared by the police charity, colleagues described Inspector Scott as far more than the uniform she wears or the acts of heroism she is known for. “Our beautiful friend and colleague, Inspector Amy Scott, has recently been diagnosed with a rare and aggressive form of breast cancer,” the fundraiser states. “Beyond her dedicated service to the community, Amy is a devoted wife, a loving mother of two young boys, and has a family who depend on her and walk this journey beside her every day.” The appeal says Inspector Scott is known as selfless, compassionate and “one of the kindest people you could ever meet”. “She is every bit the remarkable human you would think. She is fiercely independent and the first to champion others,” the fundraiser states. “Whilst she is being well supported by her family, friends and colleagues, Amy has a long uphill battle ahead to beat this insidious disease. “Amy now needs the strength, compassion, and support of her community. This is a powerful reminder that even our strongest people are human, and this fundraiser has been created to ease the financial burden for Amy and her family during this incredibly challenging time.” Premier Chris Minns said on Monday he was “devastated” to hear the news. “She’s a genuine, bona fide Australian hero, someone that we have got we owe a huge debt of gratitude to, not just because of her heroic actions in Bondi Junction of a couple of years ago, but also she’s been an inspiration to the exact same officers that attended the terrorism event on the 14th of December,” Mr Minns said. “She’s so important for New South Wales Police and our community. “I’m devastated. I’m devastated to hear this news. I mean, if anyone deserves a break, it’s Amy, and we just wish her the very best. She’s an absolute champion.” NSW Minister for Police and Counter-terrorism Yasmin Catley praised Inspector Scott for her dedication. “Amy really is the epitome of the brilliance of the New South Wales Police Force,” Ms Catley said. “The whole police family are suffering at the moment. With the knowledge of her diagnosis, we wish her and her family well.” Ms Catley shared an example of Inspector Scott’s selflessness during the Bondi terror attack. She said when she and the Premier went over to the police station, the commander told her the first call she got was from Inspector Scott asking: “Do you need me there now?” “Now you know that is just the measure of that police officer,” Ms Catley said. “She is a person who we know has been through an extraordinary terror incident herself and saved so many lives that she’s always the first one to put up a hand, to be there, to support her colleagues, to support the community, and to be the best that she can be as a police officer for New South Wales.” The fundraising goal has been set at $25,000, a target that was quickly surpassed by Monday morning, with donations continuing to grow. NSW Police Legacy, which provides ongoing care and support to the families of police officers affected by loss or hardship, said it would continue to stand beside Inspector Scott and her family throughout her treatment.
