CCTV shows a man rob a Surry Hills convenience store armed with a knife shortly before he fell to death

Security footage shows a masked man robbing a onvenience armed with a knife store shortly before he fell to his death in Surry Hills. Just after 8pm on Sunday, NSW Police responded to reports of a robbery at tobacconist and grocery store Aruma Grocer on Devonshire St, Surry Hills. Officers were told a masked man had threatened a staff member with a knife before stealing cash and fleeing the scene with a woman. “He (worker) refused to give him any cash, he (offender) took the whole cash register and he ran away from the shop holding the whole drawer” owner Faris Alwiswih told Nine news. “There’s another customer, he tried to stop him using a mop to clean the shop, but he couldn’t stop him unfortunately.” The offender can be seen carrying a large knife and threatening customer in footage from the store before he flees with the cash register that contained about $180. He meets up with a 21-year old co-offender and the pair dash across the street to a block of units on Belvoir St. Just more than an hour later, police entered a unit at the block when the man – believed to be involved in the armed robbery – jumped from the unit balcony and fell five storeys in an attempt to escape authorities, according to police. During the incident, police also arrested a 21-year-old woman who allegedly closed the unit door on officers after the man ran from police. “When police arrived, they were waiting in the hallway of the unit block and the male, who was aged in his 40s, had spotted police and then ran out to the back of the unit and jumped off the balcony,” NSW Police Acting Assistant Commissioner Scott Tanner said. “(Police) rendered first aid to the man until the arrival of an ambulance, but unfortunately, he passed away. “Both persons are well known to police.” The 21-year-old woman was charged with robbery while armed with dangerous weapon, destroy or damage property less than $2000 and hinder or resist police officer in the execution of duty. The woman was refused bail and faced court on Monday. A critical incident team from Inner West Police Area Command will investigate the circumstances surrounding this incident. The investigation will be subject of an independent review by the Professional Standards Command and oversight by the Law Enforcement Conduct Commission. A report will also be prepared for the coroner.
