A 53-year-old woman has been charged with sly grogging after Fitzroy Crossing police allegedly found her with more than 100 litres of cask wine.

At 9.15am on Wednesday, August 20, it is alleged the accused was at a location on Great Northern Highway in Fitzroy Crossing when police conducted a traffic stop.

During a search of the vehicle, officers allegedly located two plastic tubs containing 50 2-litre casks of wine amounting to 100 litres of alcohol.

Police say the local value of the wine was approximately $10,000.

The alcohol was seized and the Fitzroy Crossing woman subsequently charged with carrying, in a prescribed area of the State, a kind of liquor in a quantity that exceeded the prescribed quantity — an offence under the Liquor Control Act.

Kimberley police believe this quantity of wine was likely intended for unlawful sale in and around the central Kimberley area.

“Fitzroy Crossing police are always working to target sly groggers,” Fitzroy Crossing police Sgt Jody Worthington said.

“This latest seizure will help keep families safe by preventing the kind of violence we know occurs when illegal alcohol is smuggled into town.”

The woman was scheduled to appear in the Fitzroy Crossing Magistrates Court in September.
