Vocalist returns with band in tow

Broome welcomes hypnotic electronica and guitar-slinging siren Abbe May back to town for a night of surrealist pop, art and rock‘n’roll on Saturday.
Vocalist May, saxophonist Luke Minness, drum kit dynamo Matt Wright and bass player KT Rumble, started playing together in 2008 and are bringing their exciting brand of electronica and doom pop to Divers Tavern.
May, originally from Bunbury said she was looking forward to seeing Broome again, bringing her previous works which have won 17 Western Australian Music Industry awards since 2008 and new efforts, including single Are We Flirting?, to be released next week.
“There’s going to be one show and a little bit of sightseeing,” she said.
“On the night you can expect the songs from the old records, but also the new stuff which is more soul, more modern and more vocals-heavy rather than guitar, even though there is a fair bit of guitar.
“I’ve been to Broome once before and I loved it.
“I’m still blown away by what I’ve seen at the crocodile park.
“Everywhere has its own vibe and Broome is unlike anywhere else.
“I still remember how it smells and feels.
“It’s a very beautiful place and very different to other places I’ve been.”
May’s skills were discovered when she won the 2002 Triple J Unearthed competition and she continues to electrify crowds with songs about love and lust.
The 2014 WA Female Vocalist of the Year said there would be a wide variety of music genres for the Broome public to enjoy.
“I’ve made a lot of different types of records, from an early exploration of blues into modern rock‘n’roll, and now we are working in the soul area, but I’ve also done a lot of electronic stuff,” she said.
“You’ll find at my shows and on my records a mixture of those styles.
“The last record, Kiss My Apocalypse, there was a definite theme of love and lust that was bitter to taste.
“This time things are a little different and the new stuff is more similar to a 70s porn soundtrack.
“It’s much less angry and far more happy to be alive”.
