A record crowd turned out to participate in this year’s Kyle’s Cable Beach Walk at the weekend in memory of Broome youngster Kyle Andrews.

About 1100 people rose early on Sunday to take part in the 5km walk from Gantheaume Point to Cable Beach in support of the Kyle Andrews Foundation.

More than $20,000 was raised for the charity.

Participants were joined by youngsters from Princess Margaret Hospital who are in town this week as part of this year’s Kyle’s Camp program.

A mini expo event was held at the end of the walk at the Cable Beach Amphitheatre, featuring local exhibitors, food, refreshments and entertainment.

KAF secretary Julie Bonner said the walk and expo were a tremendous success thanks to volunteers, sponsors and the community, with organisers humbled by the number of people taking part.

“We’re so grateful for the community support,” she said.

“We ended up with 1130 walkers — the goal was to get over that 1000 mark which has stayed right under for the last couple of years so it was amazing that everybody got behind it.”

Meanwhile, this year’s camp children had already enjoyed some fun activities since arriving in Broome last Friday, including a day out on the Great Escape cruise ship.

Other highlights scheduled this week included a visit to Malcolm Douglas Wilderness Park, a trip to Willie Creek Pearl Farm and a shopping excursion.

The youngsters will return to Perth on Friday.
