Geraldton Bendigo Bank Cricket: Chapman Valley-Northampton defy underdog tag to go-back-to-back in B-grade

It’s mission accomplished for Chapman Valley-Northampton in its Geraldton Bendigo Bank Cricket League B-grade title defence, taking down Wanderers by three wickets at Wonthella on Saturday. Although its 2024-25 season win was historic, this season’s win was arguably CVN’s greatest win in its 17 seasons. To make the big dance, CVN had to beat minor premiers Sportsmans in the semi final — where they bowled them out for 35, before playing Wanderers who finished second and were considered favourites in the decider. Wanderers’ Matt Partington won the toss and batted. His side’s 103 was reasonable given Wonthella’s slow outfield It was a solid recovery after being 4-9 and then 5-22 by the 11th over. Most of their runs were from a 59-run stand between Anthony Jones (34) and Digby Williams (21) which ended when CVN skipper Alex Jones (2-15) bowled his namesake. Later, he also had Williams caught by Jake Mallia. Josh Carson (4-13), later named best player, was terrific with a wicket each for Paul Simmons and Evan Williamson. Ryan Trump (2-5) cleared the tail. In the reply, CVN’s top five made just 30 between them though Gerard Williamson (12) shone until he fell to Austyn Moulds (3-16). CVN kept losing wickets and at 7-59 was sinking. Then Carson (33 not out) and 15-year-old Colbie Hagan (16 not out) who added an unbeaten 50 to win it. Carson defended stoutly but also hit four sixes, while Hagan was the perfect partner down the other end.
