A coordinated rescue mission is underway in the State’s south after a 75-year-old woman hiking the Bibbulmun Track injured her leg.

St John Ambulance paramedics responded to the bush-walker’s triple-0 call about 11.30am, with requested aid from the SES arriving quickly at the section of the 1000km trail between Boat Harbour Road and Parry Road in Parryville.

The West Australian has been told the woman was hiking when she injured her leg about 5km from the nearest road.

The rescue operation is expected to take all day, with her position posing a significant challenge for crews to reach, lift her out and bring her to safety.

Earlier this afternoon, a St John spokeswoman said volunteers were in the process of trying to “get to the woman” and “get her to an ambulance” that was waiting at Parry Beach, but admitted it could take “all day”.

She said once the woman made it out of the bush, she would be taken to hospital under priority.

Last September, WA Police issued an urgent warning to those choosing to explore their own backyards and wander out yonder in the wake of international travel restrictions triggered by COVID-19.

It came after a 51-year-old male hiker required rescuing from the Mt Cooke section of the Bibbulmun Track.

The man activated his personal locator beacon after falling from rocks and injuring his face and wrist.

Two days earlier, three hikers lost at the Kitty Gorge Trail in Jarrahdale called triple-0.

Once found, they were winched to safety by the Police Air Wing.

Less than a week earlier, a 74-year-old woman missing for almost 24 hours was found alive at Mount Augustus.

A senior couple who had been hiking up Mount Augustus near Gascoyne Junction were found dead on September 13 — less than a week after a 53-year-old woman passed away while doing the same trek.
