Hundreds of residents in Broome gathered at Bedford Memorial Park before dawn on Anzac Day to remember Australian and New Zealand service members who have fought and died in conflicts around the world.

The dawn service drew strong community support, with representatives from emergency services, local organisations, schools and political leaders attending to lay wreaths in remembrance of those who served.

Local schoolchildren also played a role in the service, including students from St Mary’s College Broome, highlighting the importance of passing remembrance traditions to younger generations.

Proceedings began with a 5am assembly on Weld Street, opposite Broome Primary School, followed by the dawn service at 5.15am.

After the ceremony, attendees marched to Bedford Memorial Park, with the service concluding shortly before 6am.

A short daylight parade then returned along Weld Street, finishing on Anne Street.

Later in the day community members gathered at the Broome RSL branch for a gunfire breakfast, football matches, Anzac-era music, two-up from midday and a community raffle.
