Dawesville water tragedy: Man’s partner tried to revive him as he was pulled from the water on Sunday

Tragic new details are beginning to emerge in the death of a man off the WA coast on Sunday — with confirmation the young man’s partner tried desperately to revive him as he was pulled from the water. The man in his 20s died on Sunday afternoon after he was pulled from water off the coast of Dawesville. The West Australian understands the man was kayaking with his partner when he decided to free dive in the water. A short time later the man floated back to the surface semi-conscious. He soon stopped breathing and his partner tried desperately to revive him as she activated an EPIRB on her kayak. A marine rescue vessel quickly arrived on the scene. He was put onto the boat and given first aid. The RAC Rescue helicopter also arrived on the scene and a paramedic was lowered into the rescue vessel to continue giving the man emergency first aid. Despite all their efforts, the man could not be saved. Police will now prepare a report for the Coroner on the tragedy. The young man’s passing on Sunday comes just days after two other people died in a suspected drowning also in the Mandurah area. The bodies of Leslie Ballo, 49, and her husband Jon Ballo, 50, were found in the water near the Herron Point boat ramp by police on March 14 after loved ones raised the alarm. The couple, who went crabbing together every week, had entered the water on Wednesday afternoon after driving to the popular estuary. Their car was later found at the Herron Point Campground. Tributes are being paid to the couple — who leave behind a 13-year-old daughter. In a separate incident on Sunday, a man’s body was pulled from a popular South West recreation lake a day after he disappeared while tubing behind a boat. It’s understood the man was being towed on a sea biscuit on Saturday afternoon when he fell and disappeared in the water at Logue Brook Dam, near Yarloop. WA has experienced several other near and fatal drownings in recent weeks and months. A man crabbing in the Peel estuary had to be rescued in January - just a few kilometres north of the Herron Point boat ramp. He was rescued by Peel water police and assessed by paramedics, escaping the incident unscathed. On New year’s Eve two young children — a boy and a girl — drowned after they were found unresponsive in the Swan River just after 5pm. At the time, thousands of people were gathering on the banks of the river to mark the end of the year.
