Australians will soon be able to pay for an Uber using cash as the global technology giant looks to fill a consumer need.
In a big win for riders, Uber has announced Australians will be able to pay for their trips using physical tender, starting from July 16.
This will be dependent on the driver accepting the ride in cash, rather than through the app.
Passengers will have a similar experience regardless of whether they select to pay with cash or use the app as normal, as they can access GPS tracking, audio recording on requests and customer support.

Customers will still get upfront pricing before any trip, and if the Uber driver does not have the exact change, it can be handled digitally.
The move is aimed at helping Uber win business from older Australians who are more likely to use cash, in a direct move against the taxi industry.
However, cash payments will be disabled on trips to Australian airports and it won’t be available for Uber teen accounts or for riders who currently have a low rating.
Uber managing director Australia and New Zealand Emma Foley said the move was designed to help customers who preferred to use cash.
“We know many Australians still choose to use cash to manage their everyday spending – whether that’s people who feel more comfortable using cash, young people working within a weekly budget or households looking for more control over their expenses,” she said.
“We also know that for visitors arriving in Australia and navigating a new destination, having the option to pay with cash can make getting around easier.”
The announcement follows a successful trial of using cash in Launceston and Bunbury in May.
Uber says it is rolling out the changes due to customer demand, citing an RBA study that found cash was used in 15 per cent of transactions.
“By introducing cash payments on Uber, we’re helping more people get to the places and services that matter most using the payment method that suits them best,” Ms Foley said.
