AFL WATCH: Clay Hall shines as West Coast Eagles debutant Tom McCarthy shows why he was so highly rated

All eyes were on West Coast recruit Tom McCarthy as the Eagles WAFL side went down by 27 points to Swan Districts in Bassendean on Saturday. Here’s how each of the AFL-listed Eagles fared. Harry Barnett: Had one the better games of his career playing between forward and ruck. Kicked a goal to go with 11 touches and 18 hit-outs. Rhett Bazzo: Took on Swans spearhead Leigh Kohlmann and shared the honours. Worked hard up the ground to intercept to finish with 19 touches and eight marks. Malakai Champion: A quiet outing for the crafty small forward, who applied pressure but didn’t hit the scoreboard. Campbell Chesser: A strong showing in his first game of the season. Chesser had 22 touches as well as six clearances but most impressively a team-high seven tackles. Hamish Davis: Not one of the best performances from the first-year wingman who couldn’t get in the game. Struggled to keep up with Swans skipper Jesse Turner. Lucca Grego: The draftee played across half-back where he used his power to drive forward. Needs to polish up some of his ball use. Tom Gross: Played a mix of half-forward and midfield, looking much better in the latter. Kicked a classy goal from a centre clearance which will make the highlights reel. Clay Hall: One of the Eagles’ best, the young midfielder was a brute in the contest with 30 touches and six clearances. Capped his day off with two goals. Harvey Johnston: The young wingman tried to make things happen with sheer work-rate but couldn’t find his footing in the contest. Coen Livingstone: Is starting to figure out how to use his size and strength in the ruck. Had a fascinating battle with Swans bigman Troy Yukich. Tom McCarthy: A sensational debut from the half-back, who only landed in Perth days ago. Had 26 touches and was classy with ball in hand. Loch Rawlinson: Another small forward who worked hard to apply pressure. Rawlinson pushed up the ground hard all day and was rewarded when the ball was in his hands. Jobe Shanahan: Closing in on a debut as a defender, Shanahan was great down back but fell out of the game when he was swung forward in the final term.
