Western Australia have gone undefeated through the national under-16 championships to secure their first title in nearly a decade.
A comfortable 29-point victory over Victoria Country on the Gold Coast on Friday made a certainty of WA emerging as the winners of the competition for the first time since 2017.
The Black Swans did not drop any of their three games, having notched earlier victories over South Australia and Victoria Metro.
Troy Warner — the younger brother of Sydney star Chad and his fellow Swan Corey — continued a stand-out carnival by winning another 22 disposals as his side ran out 8.15 (63) to 4.10 (34) winners.
Warner won both the most valuable player award for WA’s side and the Kevin Sheehan Medal as the carnival’s overall best player, becoming the first player to win the latter award since Sam Petrevski-Seton in 2014.

The 16-year-old was one of a number of East Fremantle prospects to shine throughout the carnival, including Fremantle Next Generation Academy prospect Aiden Martignago and key forward Jayke Taylor.
WA coach Michael Glassborow said the title was just reward for the efforts which had been put into the program over several years.
“Early on we were pretty excited about the group we had and they went to a whole new level in the championships,” Glassborow said.
“The most impressive part about this group is their will to listen and learn and develop their game.
“They’re all such unselfish players and there’s no egos. They play team-first footy.”
Of the last WA side to win the under-16 title, 11 players went on to graduate into the AFL over the preceding years.
The State’s crop of under-16s in 2017 included Fremantle superstar Luke Jackson and his fellow Docker Jeremy Sharp, West Coast on-baller Deven Robertson and Melbourne premiership defender Trent Rivers.
