Former West Coast Eagle Anthony Treacy ready for big WAFL season after re-signing with Claremont Tigers

A former West Coast Eagles rookie-listed player has re-signed with his old WAFL club after taking a break from the competition. Broome product Anthony Treacy has put the Claremont Tigers’ blue and gold jersey back on after signing with the club for the 2023 season after a short stint in the Kimberley. Treacy said he was ready to jump back into some WAFL action after playing for the Derby Tigers and the Palmerston Magpies in the Northern Territory Football League last year. “I just decided to go back to the Kimberley and have a break from Perth,” he told the Broome Advertiser. “I was playing for Derby Tigers last year and I was playing for the Palmerston Magpies over the wet season. “I was feeling really fit and playing good footy and I’m only 25 so I’ve still got plenty left in the tank and I thought ‘why not give WAFL another crack?’” Treacy spent one year on West Coast’s rookie list in 2020 after being drafted as a potential replacement for suspended forward Willie Rioli. He was de-listed at the end of the season after failing to break into the senior side. Back in Perth and ready for a big year in the WAFL, Treacy said he would be concentrating on his form and hoped to keep any injuries at bay that could derail his season. “I’ve already started pre-season with Claremont and I’m just trying to stay in good form, play good footy, stay injury-free and boot some goals in the forward line and hopefully try make it to finals,” he said. With Claremont sitting at the pointy end of the competition for the past five years, Treacy said he believed the side had the makings of a premiership winning team. “I’ve only been at a few training sessions and there’s a lot of new faces, so it’s hard to get a full feel for where we are at but Claremont have been in every final over the last five years so I feel like we’re definitely a chance for the premiership this year,” he said. The WAFL 2023 season is set to start over the Easter weekend on April 9, with official fixtures to be released later this month.
