Tokyo Olympics: Clumsy British cyclists tumble from bikes moments after breaking world record

Two Great Britain cyclists were brought back down to earth in brutal fashion - seconds after setting a new world record for the Women’s Team Pursuit.

One of the riders was in a world of her own when she gradually veered down the slope of the Izu Veledrome and clipped the back tyre of teammate Katie Archibald.

Both cyclists tumbled from their bikes and slid for several metres with bewildered expressions on their faces, before picking themselves up and strolling away unscathed, still shaking their heads.

Making matters worse, Great Britain’s sizzling world record time of 4.06.748 for the 4000m event was eclipsed minutes later by gold medal favourites Germany (4.06.159).

However, it’s unlikely the incident will occupy British minds for long.

Great Britain has already secured an Olympic medal in the event and is poised to battle Germany for gold this afternoon.
