Kyuss Rimmer: 10-year-old surfer to tackle month-long wave challenge for SurfAid

For a kid who lives for surfing, it doesn’t get much better than being able to ride waves every day for a full month — while also raising money for charity.
Trigg grommet Kyuss Rimmer is heading to Sydney next week to carry out a 30-day surf challenge for SurfAid.
The 10-year-old will hit the water every day in September at Sydney’s UrbnSurf wave pool to raise money for healthcare, clean water and nutrition in remote surf-based communities around the world as part of SurfAid’s Make A Wave challenge.
Kyuss, who in June took out the title of boys’ under 12 WA State Champion, won the special access after submitting a short video showing his passion for the sport and his willingness to put in the work, no matter the conditions.
That passion emerged at the age of five, when his father first took him for a surf lesson after an earlier obsession with skateboarding.

“It was kind of funny, because I was skateboarding, but then it was summer and it was so hot, so I ended up going for a surf and loving it,” Kyuss said.
He spends as much time in the water as he can. On weekends, he surfs six hours a day and in summer he will put in up to two hours every day before school.
“I go every day that I can,” he said. “It just takes my mind off things quite a bit and takes away most of my worries.”
As part of the challenge, the North Beach Primary School student will have to document his surfing and fundraising journey.

Luckily, his mum Michelle is a content-creator as well as a primary school teacher, so he will have help with both his social media updates and his school work during the challenge.
For Kyuss, it’s also a chance to practise his technique as he works towards his goal of one day becoming a professional surfer.
“I want to be on the world surf tour — so I’d travel around the world doing competitions everywhere,” he said.
