Western Australia coach Adam Voges says he has no order from selectors on where to bat Cam Green

Western Australia have not been given a directive for Cam Green to bat at No.3 — or anywhere else in the order — as intrigue grows around his role in this summer’s Ashes series. As Green prepares to bowl for the first time in 12 months in a Sheffield Shield match against New South Wales at the WACA Ground from Saturday, WA coach Adam Voges has revealed he has not been told where the all-rounder must bat. The 26-year-old has played four Tests at first drop since returning from his back injury, but is considered a chance to slide down the order now he is bowling again. “We are just working through that at the moment. There is no directive from the Australian camp as to where Cameron bats,” Voges told The West Australian. “If it’s not three, it’ll be four and we’ll work through that over the next couple of days.” Green will have a workload cap on his return to bowling, but Voges said he was confident he can “have an impact” with ball in hand. The towering all-rounder made a run-a-ball 90 during an intra-club practice match last month. WA have named a 12-man squad for the opening clash of the shield season, which includes the shock selection of two spinners. Ashton Agar has been picked as an all-rounder and is a strong chance to bat at No.7, with Corey Rocchiccioli also named in a bowling attack that includes left-arm pair Liam Haskett and Joel Paris, with Matt Kelly and Cam Gannon. Test candidates Cameron Bancroft and Sam Whiteman will open the batting together, with Jayden Goodwin, Hilton Cartwright and wicketkeeper Joel Curtis to bat around Green. It appears both spinners are certain to play, with only six batters picked and Agar the best equipped to bat at No.7 in the absence of all-round options Aaron Hardie and Keaton Critchell. “We’ve seen the success that Corey has had at the WACA and the idea of playing two spinners isn’t as bizarre as maybe it once was,” Voges said. “We’ll work through that, we’ve got the four fast bowling options in the squad as well, we’ll just work out what balance we want to go with.” Nathan Lyon will captain NSW, which also includes breakout Test contender Sam Konstas and veteran Kurtis Patterson.
