2023 AFL Grand Final: Deven Robertson goes from draft slider to topless overnight sensation at Brisbane Lions

Deven Robertson is a household name after a wardrobe malfunction Brisbane’s last clash with Collingwood left the football world staring at his impressive physique for more than three minutes. Robertson’s Instagram followers quickly ballooned to more than 90,000 and overnight he was an internet sensation. Magpies fans were more than happy to remind the West Australian-raised midfielder why he was famous as he sat in the back of a Toyota during the grand final parade. “Me and Cal (Ah Chee) tried counting how many times we heard the comment about my shirt, we gave up at about 50 (comments), two minutes in,” he said. It’s almost unfair that it has overshadowed the skill of the 22-year-old Perth product, who had that good a final junior year that Brisbane traded two second-round picks just to leap one spot in the draft to recruit him in 2019 after he sensationally slid out of the first round. Robertson captained the WA side to under-18 championship glory in a stacked side that included Fremantle star ruckman Luke Jackson, his Melbourne premiership teammate Trent Rivers and out-going Fremantle wingman Liam Henry. All of them made the All-Australian team that year, but Robertson was also named captain of the star-studded side and earned the Larke Medal as the best player in the championship. Robertson’s WA under-18 coach Peter Sumich said he never had a better leader in his tenure. “When he was with us his leadership was second to none,” Sumich said. “He always had a slight knock on his kicking, that’s always been his Achilles heel but his endeavour and heart and soul he put into a game you can’t question. “Once he’s got the ball in his hands, his decision-making was elite. But the only knock on him is his kicking, but he’s working on it and that’s probably why he’s been in and out of Brisbane’s side.” Perth colts coach Scott Moore was part of the development program at the Demons that helped launch the AFL careers of Robertson, Fremantle’s Nathan O’Driscoll and Sydney forward Logan McDonald. Moore praised Robertson’s competitiveness which helped him stand out at junior levels. “Dev was an outstanding footballer but he was also an outstanding kid,” he said. “One of the things I loved about him was his drive to get better and push himself. “If he found that he wasn’t doing so well in a part of his game he worked hard to do it. One of the great things that drew everyone to him was just how much of a competitor he was.” Robertson has struggled to cement himself in Brisbane’s stacked midfield that is led by dual Brownlow medallist Lachie Neale and includes the likes of Hugh McCluggage, Josh Dunkley, Jarrod Berry and former skipper Dayne Zorko. The 22-year-old has played 40 games in four seasons and will equal a career-high 16 appearances in a year when he lines up for the Lions on Saturday “I think it’s a hard team to break into. They’re stacked in the midfield,” Moore said. “We’ve learnt that he plays as an inside midfielder through his 18s and he’s evolved his game to get on the outside. “I think he has cemented himself as an AFL footballer and think he’s got a bright future.” Sumich suggested Robertson could have an impact on grand final day by doing his best to curtail a Brownlow medallist if he began to dominate at the clearances. “He’d be an ideal match-up going head-to-head with a Tom Mitchell - that type of in-and-under player in a grand final,” Sumich said. “They’re very similar players. Tom’s a bit more polished, but I think it’d be a great match-up with two hard players going at it.” Once the dust settles on the grand final, the attention will turn to Robertson’s future, with the young man out of contract and yet to commit to staying at Brisbane or heading home where he has drawn significant interest from the struggling West Coast. “If he decided to come home he’d be an asset for West Coast. I believe he’s an asset for any football club,” Moore said. “But he’d be fully focused on the success of Brisbane right now.”
