Aussie distance star gunning for nationals trifecta
Jessica Hull sees no reason why she can't pull off an improbable middle-distance trifecta at the Australian athletics championships.
Hull has set herself an ambitious program at this weekend's national titles, eyeing gold in the 800m, 1500m and 5000m at Sydney Olympic Park.
The 29-year-old's schedule gives her just a 30-minute break between the 800m and 5000m finals on the last day of competition.
But the Paris Olympics 1500m silver medallist says there's no danger of spreading herself too thin, having already tested her endurance at last month's world indoor championships.
Hull claimed 1500m silver in Poland, just 24 hours after pocketing bronze in the 3000m.
The Wollongong local became the first Australian woman to break through the four-minute barrier indoors by clocking a time of 3:59.45, but fell short to Britain's Georgia Hunter Bell.
"I want to win and I believe I can. That's why I'm trying those kinds of things," Hull said on Wednesday.
"Given the order of things, the 800 first and then the 5K, I think it's fine.
"I might completely change my mind about four laps into that 5K, but I think the ordering of things, it'll be a good amount of time just to reset.
"It's not an unrealistic thing to try, based on the way we train.
"I did some back-to-back-to-back stuff in Poland, where I felt really sharp.
"If I'm trying to be one of the best in the world and trying to win golds on the world stage, I've just got to be able to do these things along the way."
Hull is just one big name set to compete at Sydney Olympic Park, with Peter Bol running in the 800m and Gout Gout and Lachlan Kennedy to face off again in the 200m.
Olympic pole vault champion Nina Kennedy and high jump heavyweight Nicola Olyslagers will also be in Sydney, but sprinter Torrie Lewis is a notable absentee.
Paris discus bronze medallist Matt Denny is in the US looking to set a world record at the Ramona World Invitational.
Hull will race rising star Claudia Hollingsworth for the first time as the pair look to secure their spots for this year's Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.
The 20-year-old Hollingsworth sensationally held off Hunter Bell for victory in the 1500m at last month's Maurie Plant Meet.
"When I saw Claudia do it, I wasn't surprised. It's been in there for a long time," Hull said.
"It just levels it up, like 'Okay, Claudia's in shape, let's make sure we show up ready'."
