Star ruckman Max Gawn said he was ready to book his ticket to US music festival Coachella when he went down with a knee injury at a Melbourne training camp last week.

Now nine days on, the Demons big man says he is relieved and excited by the prospect of playing round one after being cleared of major damage.

“A couple of Port Adelaide examples and a few guys that played soccer that were back in three or four weeks so that’s what I will hope I can do,” Gawn told 7NEWS.

“I’ve done two ACLs, so if anything goes wrong with my knee I get a little bit scared as well.”

Gawn is still hopeful of playing pre-season footy leading into round one but will meet with medical staff on Monday to map out his recovery.

The 28-year-old arrived back in Melbourne on Sunday in a knee brace, after injuring his knee at the club’s training camp in Queensland.

At the time, there were fears Gawn’s season could be over given his history with knee injuries.

He was immediately assisted from the track and sent for scans.

“Half an hour into the MRI wasn’t the most comfortable half hour for me,” Gawn joked.

“I was already booking my tickets to Coachella. I’m here now and I get to play round one.”

Luckily for Gawn, the scans revealed a Grade 2 medial ligament strain.

The club expects Gawn to be back running this week as part of a modified training program.
