Gold Coast coach Damien Hardwick jokes AFL Tribunal could solve crime, weighs in on Rhyan Mansell suspension

Gold Coast coach Damien Hardwick has a novel way to solve crime: put the AFL Tribunal in charge of Australia’s court system. “If we get the AFL Tribunal to run the judicial system within our states, that would be awesome,” Hardwick told reporters on Thursday. “Because I tell you what, a lot of criminals would actually be staying in jail - but don’t get me started.” While Hardwick’s comments may have been tongue-in-cheek, the triple premiership coach was serious in querying the three-match suspension to Richmond’s Rhyan Mansell. In what was considered a tribunal test case, Mansell was banned for a push which led to an opponent crashing into a marking contest and being concussed. Hardwick said Mansell was “maybe a bit stiff” to cop such a lengthy suspension, which came after the AFL issued a memo warning of sanctions after similar incidents in pre-season games went unpunished. “It’s the duty of care and we do understand it,” Hardwick said. “What I think I feel uncomfortable with is the three weeks. “We sit there and talk about the AFL send through the submission, the memo, that things are going to change. “Well, the matrix for me has to change as well. “We can’t sit there and ask a player to make a split-second decision in what is a little bit of a football act with regard to that, football craft, and then get three weeks. “If it was one week, I think we would all sit there and say: ‘You know what, we owe a duty of care, we understand that’. “But it’s three weeks that comes with it, everyone is going ‘well, is it a three-week suspension? “Smarter men than me will figure that out but I think there’s some things that we can look to change.” Hardwick’s Suns host Adelaide on Saturday in a match between undefeated clubs on the Gold Coast scheduled to start at the hottest part of the day: noon. The Suns mentor said his team would be advantaged by forecast hot and humid conditions. “Obviously the way the conditions are probably lends itself to a little bit more combative style of game, less uncontested marks, which is a strength of the Crows,” Hardwick said. “So hopefully ... it’s nice and hot and nice and humid, and nice and sweaty. “I sit there in a nice air-conditioned coaches box so it’s not too challenging for me but with the players, I reckon our guys are really fit, they handle the conditions really well. “Humidity might be a factor, we understand that, but it’s the nature of the game. It’s a battle of attrition - we take it on.”
