West Coast premiership star Adam Selwood passes away just months after twin brother Troy
West Coast premiership star Adam Selwood has passed away, just three months after the tragic loss of his twin brother Troy.
Police revealed a man was found deceased in Herdsman during a welfare check during the early hours of Saturday morning.
“About 6.20am Saturday 17 May, 2025, police received a report of welfare concerns for a 41-year-old male in Herdsman,” a Police spokeswoman said.
“Police attended and the man was sadly located deceased. The death is not being treated as suspicious and a report will be prepared for the coroner.”
The AFL then confirmed the news in a statement later in the morning, attributed to Fiona Selwood and the Selwood family.
“We are heartbroken by the passing of Adam earlier today. Words cannot express the grief and sadness we feel,” the statement read.
“Adam was a loving husband, and an incredible father to Lenny and Billie. We are devastated to lose such a wonderful husband, father, son and brother.
“We will miss Adam deeply—his spirit, his kindness, and the joy he brought to every room. His determination, the lessons he shared, and his infectious personality will stay with us always.
“Adam had a unique ability to make people feel special, and our family was lucky to experience that every day.
“We kindly ask for privacy as we navigate this difficult time.”
Adam, who played 187 games for the Eagles, including the 2006 premiership, was just 41.
His identical twin brother Troy, who played 75 games for Brisbane, died in February at age 40.
Troy was farewelled at a service in Geelong, in which Adam described his twin as “full of life, full of love, full of wisdom beyond his years”.
“Having an identical twin is a both a rare privilege and wonderfully complex,” he said.
“A twin is more than a sibling. They are a constant presence, a built-in mate.
“He was my mirror, my fiercest competitor, my greatest ally and the one person who knew what I was always thinking.”
The pair come from a famous football family, with younger brother Joel a Geelong premiership captain and Scott a former West Coast and Geelong player.
Adam moved to Perth as a teenager after being drafted by West Coast in 2002.
After his retirement in 2013, Selwood joined the Eagles’ coaching ranks, where he guided the club’s midfield for four seasons. He was also an integral part of the club’s female football program, including through their introduction to the AFLW in 2020.
Scott Selwood, now an assistant coach at Collingwood, was due to be at the MCG on Saturday for the club’s clash with Adelaide but has been grated personal leave.
