Undetected asylum seeker boat lands in Beagle Bay in WA’s north, near Broome

The Federal Government is under renewed fire after a boat carrying more than two dozen suspected asylum seekers was able to arrive undetected in a remote community in WA’s north. The men, who are believed to have crossed from Indonesia, made their way through crocodile-filled mangroves before being discovered in the remote Indigenous community of Beagle Bay, 130km north of Broome. It is the second boat of suspected asylum seekers to have reached WA since November and came just hours after the Australian Border Force boasted on social media about its operations to halt illegal fishing, saying: “You can run but you can’t hide.” The group of men, from Pakistan and Bangladesh, were found around 10am trying to find some respite from the heat near the small town Beagle Bay, which is home to about 300 people. The new arrivals had been first spotted by a driver and scattered into the bush. They eventually made their way to the Beagle Bay Community store where they bought water and orange juice and were said to be smiling and in good spirits. Just a couple of hours later ABF officials arrived from Broome to process the arrivals and the men were taken to Sacred Heart School. Opposition Leader Peter Dutton said the news of the boat was disturbing and that the Government had “lost control of our borders”. “Clearly there has been a catastrophic failure in the system here because this boat has arrived undetected,” Mr Dutton, pictured below, said. When Prime Minister Anthony Albanese was asked about the reports on Friday, he said he had no information to share about the situation as he had been travelling by car and had not advised. “But our policies are clear, which is that boats that arrive in that fashion ... we have policies in place that ensure they are dealt with,” the PM said. The Opposition has criticised the Albanese Government for not doing enough to protect Australia’s borders. “Clearly, the Government has not taken border protection seriously. The Prime Minister has never believed in border protection, along with (Immigration Minister) Andrew Giles,” Mr Dutton said. “The people smugglers will sense our weakness ... they have found a weak minister and the Labor Party does not believe in sovereign borders.” It is the second time a boat has slipped under the radar and arrived on WA’s shores in three months, with the Government under pressure to explain why it keeps happening. In November, a vessel with about a dozen people from Indonesia arrived in the Kimberley region. The group trekked through the treacherous terrain for two days in 35C heat before arriving at the Truscott North Kimberley Airport and was given food, water and shelter. This prompted the ABF a month later to launch a new operation off the WA coast to help authorities tackle the higher-than-usual number of illegal foreign boats detected in the region. Operation LEEDSTRUM is focused on ramping up aerial, land and sea surveillance to deter, detect and take enforcement action against overseas fishers, particularly from Indonesia. And just hours before Friday’s boat was discovered in Beagle Bay, authorities trumpeted how well the operation had performed in its first two months. “(We have) intercepted three Indonesian fishing vessels operating illegally within the Kimberley Marine Park in separate events,” the Australian Fisheries Management Authority and ABF said in a joint statement. Durack MP Melissa Price accused Mr Albanese of putting her electorate at risk. “The Prime Minister needs to reverse the cuts he made to border protection funding as a matter of urgency,” she said. On Friday, the ABF confirmed it was responding to the boat’s arrival but as the “operation is ongoing, no further information will be provided”. “Australia’s tough border protection policies mean no one who travels unauthorised by boat will ever be allowed to settle permanently in Australia. The only way to travel to Australia is legally, with an Australian visa,” it said in a statement. “Australia remains committed to protecting its borders, stamping out people smuggling and preventing vulnerable people from risking their lives. The people-smuggling business model is built on the exploitation of information and selling lies to vulnerable people who will give up everything to risk their lives at sea.” Operation Sovereign Borders Commander Rear Admiral Brett Sonter said the mission remained “the same today as it was when it was established in 2013: protect Australia’s borders, combat people smuggling in our region, and importantly, prevent people from risking their lives at sea”. “Any alternate narrative will be exploited by criminal people smugglers to deceive potential irregular immigrants and convince them to risk their lives and travel to Australia by boat,” he said. The West Australian obtained videos in November showing boats packed with people believed to be from Indonesia in waters off the Kimberley coast, and footage of rubbish left on Vansittart Bay — a protected island in the region. Experts have previously warned that authorities have been struggling to keep track of the rise in illegal fishing and increased risk of smuggling of drugs and asylum seekers because of the sheer size of its northern coastlines.
