Kooyong electorate guide: Federal election 2025 candidates, results and margin
A key seat won off the Liberals by a teal independent in 2022, the race for Kooyong has turned into one of the most heated in the country this election.
Situated in Melbourne’s inner-east, Kooyong is a relatively wealthy area with the median weekly family income around $1000 higher than the national average.
Kooyong was one of the most high-profile losses for the Liberals in the last election with teal independent Monique Ryan beating out sitting Treasurer and future leadership candidate Josh Frydenberg, who had held the seat since 2010.
It was the first time since 1945 — when the Liberal party contested its first election — the seat had fallen out of Liberal hands.
Dr Ryan won the seat by a margin of 2.9 per cent, which has now been reduced to a notional 2.2 per cent following a redistribution.
The redistribution has seen Kooyong shift slightly south with the inclusion of suburbs such as Malvern, Toorak, Armadale and parts of Prahran. It also loses suburbs on the east of the electorate.
This election the Liberal party has preselected finance and technology executive Amelia Hamer.
Ms Hamer has come under fire during the campaign with revelations she owns two investment properties while renting a home in the electorate for herself despite marketing herself as a renter.
While her status as a renter is true, she has been criticised for making herself out as a renter in her pitch to connect to young voters.
The campaign for Kooyong has at times gotten nasty, with Dr Ryan’s husband being caught removing a sign of her Liberal competitor’s sign, something for which both Ms Ryan and her husband apologised.
