As some of the most influential world leaders gathered in the White House in the hope of securing a peace deal between Russia and Ukraine, US President Trump made a comment, not realising a mic was on.

Mr Trump has welcomed Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, French President Emmanuel Macron, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and Finnish President Alexander Stubb to the US capitol, aiming to make further progress to end to Russia-Ukraine war.

The meeting came after a historic meeting in Anchorage, Alaska on Friday (local time), where Mr Trump met with Russian President Vladimir Putin, where he said the two agreed on many points, but not all, and committed to making calls and having further talks with world leaders.

During a moment in the White House East Room, Mr Trump stood beside Mr Macron of France, revealing what hope he had for Mr Putin coming to the table to end the war, which began in 2022.

“I think he (Mr Putin) wants to make a deal,” Mr Trump could be heard saying quietly to Mr Macron in the White House, not realising he could be heard on a microphone.

“I think he wants to make a deal for me, you understand that? As crazy as it sounds.”

Mr Trump has long boasted about his relationship with Mr Putin, campaigning in 2024 for a return to office with a promise that he could end the Russia-Ukraine war in a day.

However, since Mr Trump returned to office in 2025, his relationship with Mr Putin has been brought into question, as progress to bring an end to the war was slow.

The historic meeting in Alaska was the first time Mr Trump and Mr Putin had met face-to-face since 2019.

After the three-hour meeting, Mr Putin made comments that the previous Administration, led by former US President Joe Biden, had damaged relations between Russia and the United States, but spoke highly of Mr Trump.

“I think that overall, me and President Trump have built a very good business-like and trustworthy contact. I have every reason to believe that moving down this path, we can come and the sooner the better, to the end of the conflict in Ukraine,” Mr Putin said at the Alaska Summit.

During Mr Trump’s meeting with Mr Zelensky and top European Leaders on Monday, the US President left the party to call Mr Putin directly. Exact details of the conversation have not yet been revealed, however, Mr Trump later said he discussed a “Trilat” meeting.

Taking to Truth Social after the meetings in the East Room and Oval Office, Mr Trump said the meeting was “very good”.

“During the meeting we discussed Security Guarantees for Ukraine, which Guarantees would be provided by the various European Countries, with a coordination with the United States of America,” he wrote.

“Everyone is very happy about the possibility of PEACE for Russia/Ukraine.

“At the conclusion of the meetings, I called President Putin, and began the arrangements for a meeting, at a location to be determined, between President Putin and President Zelenskyy.

“After that meeting takes place, we will have a Trilat, which would be the two Presidents, plus myself.

“Again, this was a very good, early step for a War that has been going on for almost four years.

“Vice President JD Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and Special Envoy Steve Witkoff, are coordinating with Russia and Ukraine.”

Details of a next meeting with Mr Trump, Mr Zelensky and Mr Putin have not yet been announced.
