Three iconic WA road trips have been ranked the best in the nation - offering holidaymakers food for thought just in time for the holiday season.

The Cape to Cape, South West Edge and Coral Coast Highway are among the top four trips recommended for families, given they have extensive mobile coverage, plenty of rest stops and manageable summer temperatures.

The same routes also ranked among the top six when it comes to romantic getaways or for those going solo.

Car insurance comparison experts at iSelect compared 22 of Australia’s most popular road trips to determine the best routes for families, couples and solo travellers.

The 123km Cape to Cape drive, from Cape Naturaliste to Cape Leeuwin in WA’s South West, received extra points for the combination of food and scenery its offers, including romantic restaurants to stop at along the drive.

The 12-day, 1200km South West Edge drive from Perth to Esperance and 3277km Coral Coast highway from Perth to Exmouth also offer more epic trips for intrepid adventurers.

Along the way, couples will find plenty of romantic accommodation options, which helped the two routes firmly cement their place on the leaderboard.

The reliable mobile phone coverage also made these trips among the safest for those travelling on their own.

iSelect general manager Adrian Bennett said the results made it clear that West Australians don’t need to go far to experience some of the best road-trip routes in the country.

“Our analysis shows that choosing the right road trip isn’t just about chasing the prettiest coastline, it’s about finding routes that support a safe, smooth and enjoyable journey,” Mr Bennett said.

“When you factor in things like mobile coverage, hospital access, rest-stop density and weather conditions, the differences between routes become far more meaningful for families, couples and solo travellers alike.”
