Swan River shark attack: Cameron Wrathall’s daughter Keeley says he will not be deterred from his daily swim

Swan River shark attack victim Cameron Wrathall will not be deterred from his daily Swan River swims despite being critically injured this morning, according to his family. The 54-year-old Bicton man was swimming with friend Richard O’Brien near Blackwall Reach when he was attacked about 8am this morning. His daughter Keeley Wrathall has thanked those who went to her father’s aid and insisted he would return to the water as soon as he was able to. “My sister and I are extremely thankful for the people down there who were able to help him, the kayakers and Richard who he swims with every day,” she told The West Australian. “He loves that area, it has been home to him for many years and enjoys his swims in the river everyday. “I am sure that this won’t stop him from swimming down there and we look forward to the jokes he creates about being shark bait.” Ms Wrathall said her dad, who is affectionately known as “Wizard” by friends and family, was rescued by kayakers, one of whom took off their t-shirt and wrapped a tourniquet around his side, while waiting for St John Ambulance crews to arrive. The father-of-two is undergoing emergency surgery on his upper right thigh at Royal Perth Hospital this afternoon. Ms Wrathall and her sister Cian are at the hospital waiting for their father. David Davenport, who lives across the road from the river, was on his deck when he heard shouting and splashing. “After a while the splashing stopped and they … started swimming to shore,” he said. “I could see the trail of blood coming out the one guy … that was quite scary. Mr Davenport said once the men got to shore, the kayakers swam over to help and used a stand-up paddleboard as a stretcher to carry the injured man on to another resident’s front lawn. He said they then took off his shirt and used it as a tourniquet. “The amount of blood I saw coming out of him – it was quite astounding,” Mr Davenport said. “You have to take the hats off to those guys.”
