Perth is copping the worst of a cold and rainy weather system on Saturday, with up to 20mm of rain forecast as showers, thunderstorms and strong south-westerly winds sweep across the metropolitan area.

Residents woke to a barrage of rain after a cold front hit the metro area before shifting east on Saturday morning, bringing with it vigorous south-westerly winds.

An isolated thunderstorm remains possible, particularly across Perth’s south-west and coastal areas.

Bureau of Meteorology meteorologist Caroline Crow said Perth was particularly cold on Saturday morning with an overnight minimum of 6C recorded.

“It’s pretty cool for Perth today, currently sitting on 10C mid-morning,” she said.

The city is forecast to reach a top of 16C, with gusty showers expected to ease later on Saturday afternoon.

Strong winds have been recorded offshore, with gusts reaching 96km/hr at Rottnest Island about 6am and there is a gale and strong wind warning for Perth local waters and Melville waters.

Residents and visitors along Perth’s coast can expect blustery conditions, though winds are expected to ease early in the evening.

The temperature may warm to around 17C on Saturday, although cloudy skies and cool conditions will remain until Sunday.

“Coming into Sunday, just a shower or two with lighter winds,” Ms Crow said.

A moderate cold front is expected to move across the region on Monday, bringing another burst of morning showers and a good southerly flow behind it.

Monday is likely to be the wettest and windiest day of the working week, although conditions should begin to settle afterwards.

By Tuesday, showers should ease and skies become partly cloudy, with a forecast top of 17C.

Wednesday and Thursday are expected to bring gradually clearing skies and more settled conditions.

Residents heading outdoors today should allow extra time on the roads, secure loose outdoor items and take care near the coast, where strong wind gusts may continue.
