Lights contest proves merry affair

A cohort of merry Broome residents got into the festive spirit jumped aboard the town’s iconic red double decker bus for theBroome Advertiser’s annual Christmas Lights competition.

After careful consideration, a shortlist of 14 homes was meticulously compiled, with passengers on the Top Deck Tours bus captivated by the colourful displays.

A panel of judges marked the respective homes out of ten, with the votes going down to the wire to decide the winner of the much-coveted $1000 cash prize, kindly donated by Horizon Power.

The McRae family of 14 Honeyeater Loop in Roebuck Estate scooped top spot courtesy of a colourful and inventive display.

The Kimberley inspired winning home boasts dinosaur footprints, an egg-laying turtle, Santa fishing and a pearl shell – all created by Christmas lights.

Youngsters on board the bus jumped off with glee to get a closer glimpse of the vibrant house, which clearly took hours of preparation and work to perfect.

Steve Brougham’s entry at 85 Jigal Drive was voted as the competition runner-up, with a $750 shopping spree the prize for second place. This was offered up by local businesses Broome Betta Home Living, Streeter’s Mitre 10 and Leading Edge Computers Broome.

The Roebuck Estate home’s efforts had a traditional feel as a motorised toy train circling a tree, while Dasher and Dancer gleefully helped Santa on his merry way.

Mr Brougham’s effort also has a signature Broome element, with a striking Staircase to the Moon inspired light show.

Meanwhile, LJ Hooker Broome was unanimously heralded as the winning business for their festive showing at 9 Short Street in Chinatown.

The judges agreed that the calibre of this year’s entries was a credit to the Christmas-mad Broome public, with the Kimberley town clearly gearing up for the festive period.
