Invasive cane toads spotted in Derby and Kimberley coastline after record-breaking floods

WA’s fight to stop the spread of cane toads is faltering, with Kimberley locals reporting the toxic pest has wiped out native wildlife and reached the western coastline of the region. Concerns in 2022 that the cane toad would reach Derby have also been realised after record-breaking floods lead to their spread beyond the remote frontline of Freshwater Cove. The sighting in Derby has amplified fears the cane toads could be in Broome by 2025. A DBCA spokeswoman confirmed the declared pest, which poses a threat to native animals, had been found in the regional town. “There have been cane toads recently spotted in and around Derby and found across the Kimberley,” she said. It has sparked fresh fears for the native wildwife, with Isobel Peters, an Arraluli clan of the Worrorra tribe Traditional Owner, reporting the quoll population in Freshwater Cove had been wiped out. “We used to have lots of quolls but we haven’t seen anything at all,” she said. “The only thing we can put it down to is the cane toads. “I’m very concerned for all the native wildlife as we have rare snakes, lizards, and frogs here. “It will leave the ecosystem out of balance, which it already sort of is.” Ms Peters said snakes and lizards had moved into the caves where the quolls used to live. She believed the floods in the Kimberley had transported the toads westwards. Ms Peters has been working with her family to kill the cane toad population, already finding between 50 to 60. “My family are killing and burning them we we come across the cane toads because that’s the only way we can get rid of them,” she said. “We have killed a lot but I’m sure there is more out there.
