The $33 million demolition of the grandstands and other infrastructure at Subiaco Oval starts next month, with Premier McGowan yesterday announcing a “Final Siren Fun Day” next Sunday.

Mr McGowan is calling on West Australians to come down to Subiaco Oval “one last time” as the curtain comes down on a significant part of WA sporting history.

“Subiaco Oval has been an iconic Western Australian venue for decades,” Mr McGowan said. “Many Western Australians have cheered on their favourite football teams at Subi or seen an iconic performer.

“The Final Siren is an opportunity for anyone who has created memories at Subi to come and walk on the turf, kick a footy and create your own mark in history.

“I’d encourage all community members to bring their families down and enjoy the day.”

The Subiaco Oval playing surface will remain, as part of the redevelopment of that area — which involves the construction of a new high school Bob Hawke College — next door.

Known as the Subi-East redevelopment, the majority of the ageing infrastructure at Subiaco Oval will be removed, including the grandstands, light towers, carparks, former Subiaco Football Club and associated buildings.

The State heritage-listed entry gates will remain and be incorporated into the future development, while the Sandover Medal walk will be carefully removed for future relocation or interpretation.

The WA Football Commission will also have its headquarters relocated to the oval precinct as part of the Subi East redevelopment.

“From tears to cheers, like most West Australians, I have some amazing memories from Subiaco Oval,” Transport Minister Rita Saffioti said. “I’m very proud that the oval itself will be the key green space that the future Subi East redevelopment and Bob Hawke College are based around, ensuring many more memories will be made in the future.”

The Final Siren Fun Day is taking place from 11am-2pm.

Entry will be free, with access to the oval, parts of the stands, food trucks and a range of entertainment and activities.

People will have a chance to have a kick on the oval, and meet legends of the game.
