Water spewing from a fire hydrant workers mistakenly left running has caused an early-morning headache for commuters heading into the city.

Floods of water spewing onto the city bound entry of the Causeway in East Perth shut down a lane of traffic Thursday morning.

Crews were called in to direct traffic following the rupture.

Traffic cameras captured dramatic flooding and a spurt of water shooting into the air.

Main Roads issued an alert to the public at about 6am, warning of excess water on the road.

Drivers were told to approach the area with caution.

The incident was initially described as a burst water main, but Water Corp later clarified a contracting company was to blame.

“A fire hydrant was not turned off properly by workers that tap into its water source for work on the bridge,” a spokesperson said.

By 9am, the issue had been resolved and the lane of traffic was reopened.
