A healthy, 14-month-old toddler is fighting for his life after a horrifying baking incident put him in an induced coma.
Dustin Wildman was with his mother, Katie Robinson, a professional baker on the Gold Coast, while she was making a Bluey-themed cake for a friend on Friday afternoon.
Ms Robinson told the Courier Mail that Dustin started rummaging through her baking drawer and found a small vial of metallic rose gold decorative dust, which he then inhaled.
“It was so quick. He was just playing around like he usually does when he suddenly got his hands on the dust,” she said.
“I wasn’t using it on the Bluey cake, but it was just among my many baking products.”
Soon after breathing in the ornamental dust, Dustin started to choke and cry before becoming unresponsive.
“One minute I’m baking and the next I am trying to keep my baby conscious,” she said.
After being rushed to the Queensland Children’s Hospital by ambulance, Dustin had surgery to clear his lungs and was placed in an induced coma.
Ms Robinson has since learned the dust contains copper and is now calling for the dust to be labelled as toxic.
“I was horrified to hear the dust contained copper, which won’t dissolve in the blood and gathered in his lungs,” she said.
“Now we have to wait to make sure his kidneys and liver are OK.
“I can hardly believe that he cannot breathe on his own and is on breathing tubes.
“This has turned our lives upside down as the doctors say it is a watch and wait situation.
“The doctors are as shocked as we are about the damage that has been done.
“The dust has turned to a toxic paste.”
She says she has been in touch with suppliers who have allegedly assured her they will be pulling the ornamental dust from supermarket shelves.
At the time of publication, no recall had been posted on the Food Standards Australia and New Zealand website.
A GoFundMe has been set up by a friend, Rochelle Evrard, the mother of the child the cake was being baked for.
On the page, Ms Evrard wrote that Ms Robinson and her partner had put work on hold on the Gold Coast to be with Dustin in Brisbane.
“Katie and Chris are both sole traders and don’t know when they’ll be able to work again as Dusty’s condition is so rare they don’t know how long he’ll be in hospital for,” she said.
“Ronald McDonald House only have accommodation for them until tomorrow so now they need to pay for accommodation while also trying to keep up with their mortgage and normal life expenses.“
It had raised more than $16,000 on Wednesday morning.
