Kununurra has been crowned Western Australia’s top tourism destination.

The East Kimberley town would gold at the 2026 7NEWS Top Tourism Town Awards announced at the Perth Airport WA Tourism Conference Dinner in Carnarvon on May 28.

Geraldton received silver while Kalgoorlie-Boulder took home bronze in the Top Tourism Town category.

As part of the win, Kununurra will receive a $20,000 airtime package on 7 Regional WA to promote the town across the State.

The prestigious awards, which have been running for 37 years, recognise towns and cities across Western Australia for their commitment to tourism and the innovative experiences and facilities they offer visitors.

Tourism Council WA chief executive Evan Hall congratulated this year’s winners and highlighted Kununurra’s strong tourism offering.

“Congratulations to this year’s winners of the Top Tourism Town Awards. Kununurra, Jurien Bay and Kalbarri have all displayed an exceptional commitment to delivering high-quality visitor experiences,” he said.

“All medallists have impressed both an industry panel of judges and the public through consumer voting.

“The winners will now go on to represent Western Australia on a national level in the Australian Top Tourism Town Awards in September.”

Kununurra’s deserved growing reputation as one of Australia’s must-visit destinations continues to be driven by its spectacular, untouched natural beauty, a thriving events calendar, cultural experiences and award-winning tourism operators.

For travelling foodies, the town offers a unique culinary scene that blends an ancient connection to the land with modern excellence.

The Gourmet Camp Oven Experience, a fine-dining experience held under the starry Kimberley night sky, recently claimed two gold awards at the national Qantas Australian Tourism Awards in March.

Speaking at a press conference on Tuesday, Premier Roger Cook said Kununurra was a deserved winner of the title of top tourism town.

“The Kimberley is one of my favourite parts of WA,” he said.

“It’s a beautiful part of the world, and I’ve never missed the opportunity to go and visit again and again,” he said.

The town has also been making headlines across the country as it played host to the Ord Valley Muster, which celebrated a quarter-century of music, culture and Country.

The iconic event wrapped up earlier this month, attracting headline artists Tina Arena, Boy & Bear and Budjerah to perform to sold-out crowds.

Kununurra Visitor Centre chief executive Vivienne McEvoy said the win was a proud achievement for the entire region.

“Means so much for our town Kununurra and also Wyndham and our region,” she said.

“Kununurra is such a beautiful place to visit, and even more special when we as locals get to share it with our family, friends and visitors.

“It’s time for everyone to be our guest because the best way to visit is to be invited.

“We’re so proud to share the place we call home with visitors from near and far, and we can’t wait to showcase everything our region has to offer on the national stage.

“Next stop: the national awards in September!”

The awards are run by Tourism Council WA and Visitor Centres WA, with support from 7NEWS, Tourism WA, Vanguard Media Group, Storytowns and RAC Parks & Resorts.
