Cook Labor Government delivering on country week commitment, making costs cheaper for regional students

A key commitment from the State election affecting regional families will be rolled out next month.

The State Government is delivering on its election pledge to support regional students attending country week through an $8 million grant program, helping send students away with a $250 cost reduction for those who live within 300km of the Perth competition facilities, and $500 for those travelling more than 300km.

Premier Roger Cook said the assistance was designed to help ease cost-of-living pressures on families.

“By assisting with travel and accommodation costs, we’re backing parents and helping ensure all students can be part of country week,” he said.

The country week sporting competition is well known across WA, with both public and private schools invited to compete in various sports including football, soccer, basketball, hockey, and dance.

Education Minister Sabine Winton said it was important for regional students to take to a Statewide stage.

“Country week connects students from across regional Western Australia through healthy competition and shared pride,” she said.

“It’s a highlight of the school year, giving regional students the opportunity to step into a different environment, represent their school, and form new friendships through playing sport.

“This will deliver important cost-of-living relief to regional families right across the State — relief for regional families who are receiving this important cost-of-living relief to support their children to attend country week events.”

Country week for senior high schools will take place from June 30-July 4, with the district high school week running from September 22-25.
