Volunteer firefighters are battling a blaze off Port Drive in Broome as a layer of smoke covers the tourism town.

A Department of Fire and Emergency Services spokesman said crews received a 000 call at 2.45pm this afternoon alerting them to a fire behind the Broome Sewerage facility, near Broome Golf Course.

Initially reports found the fire was quite large and extra personnel were brought in, the fire is understood to be contained with occasional hot spots.

DFES staff will be operating in the area for the next hour, no roads are currently closed and the cause of the fire is unknown.
