Shire of Coolgardie reveals first five-year Creative and Cultural Plan

The Shire of Coolgardie seeks to celebrate the rich culture and creative talents within the community through its first Creative and Cultural Plan. The new plan seeks to build a creative identity for the shire and celebrates local culture and talent while also reflecting the uniqueness of the Coolgardie and Kambalda towns. It lists various key actions for each of the towns, including scoping the use of the Coolgardie train station precinct as an arts and culture hub, and illuminating historic buildings to align with special days. The plan also highlights advocating and supporting initiatives such as astro-tourism, art trails and art experiences which connect to the local landscape, and supporting initiatives that promote the inclusion of local FIFO workers in activities. It also suggests supporting organisations in the delivery of new and unique events celebrating First Nations arts and culture, such as bush band-style events. Artistic talent such as art and photographic competitions and local makers markets also fall under the plan. It comes after the shire was awarded a $46,000 grant from the Department of Local Government, Sport, and Cultural Industries in 2023 to develop the plan. During the course of five years from 2024 to 2028, the plan — broken into four key focus areas; connect, prosper, celebrate, and inspire — magnifies the role local art, artists, First Nations and industry play in the social, cultural, economic, and artistic vibrancy of the shire. Shire president Malcom Cullen said the plan was written in partnership with the community. “It aims to inspire people to contribute their artistic expression to the broader community or become involved in celebrating the creativity of others,” he said. “By working together, we can bring more and more dimensions of vitality to this place.” The plan itself includes original artwork by Debbie Carmody and storyteller Alison Dimer.
