Scholarship helps Jed to thrive at uni

Broome student Jed Newman intends to make the most out of a scholarship that has opened the door to university.

Newman, who has begun studying for a Bachelor of Environmental Science and Creative Media double major at Murdoch University in Perth, was one of seven students from regional Australia who were awarded scholarships from the George Alexander Foundation.

Mr Newman said the scholarship has given him more flexibility when it came to studying as well as socialising.

“My introduction to university has been very smooth and enjoyable,” he said. “The best thing has been all the new friends I have gained over the last few weeks.

“I grew up with the same people throughout school, so meeting all these new people has been great.

“As fun as this new freedom is, I feel I will always see Broome as home.”

Mr Newman also said studying at university seemed much more laidback than high school and he felt more in control of what he was learning.

The George Alexander Foundation scholarships are worth more than $24,000 over three years and aim to alleviate financial pressures associated with attending university far from family and friends.
