The Broome Bowling Club greens were busy over the weekend for the club’s first Sunday competition of the year.

The start of a new year at the club heralded a new competition, the Club Members’ Triples Competition, sponsored by Domino’s Broome. Club president Kevin May said 18 teams of three took to the mats and the tournament was just one of many new events planned for the year.

“We did really, really well last year,” he said. “Memberships were up —every year they have been increasing and we are trying a couple of new things this year such as today,” he said. “We’ve now got the Sunday afternoon club members competition, it says to the members that we want to provide a format, just for them before the tourist season actually picks up.”

Team Kittyhawks defeated 3Tenors on Sunday 16-14, premiership leaders Elohesra overcame Mad Dogs, 14-8, Reds Mob overpowered Mad Dogs, 14-8, and Three Amigos beat Fill Ins, 10-8. The bowling club will also be reintroducing its Corporate Bowls competition next Tuesday from 6.30pm, to strengthen the numbers turning up to weekly Barefoot Bowls events.

“Barefoot Bowls, the numbers are increasing since we opened up five weeks ago,” Mr May said.

“Last Friday night we had about 40 players.”
