He may call the fisherman’s paradise of Byron Bay home, but Hollywood A-Lister Chris Hemsworth believes there is no place in the country as unique as the Kimberley to reel one in.

Speaking at an industry event for Tourism Australia’s new “Philausophy” campaign in Sydney recently, the Thor actor recounted his visit to the region with a group of mates, one that had him on his toes from start to finish.

“One of the most unique trips we had was up to the Kimberley and I took my friends on a fishing trip out there and they thought it was going to be a really relaxed, plush sort of experience,” he said.

“We helicoptered in, which was plush and wonderful and into this real remote location called Alcatraz, which might give you an indication of the general nature of the spot.

“There’s crocs everywhere, there’s croc tracks, the guys kept saying keep your eyes on that, the river, if you see tracks, just keep your eyes behind you, so I was trying to fish in a 360 sort of loop.

“We were hiking all day, we took food with us and it was completely different to any fishing trip that any of us had done.”

Hemsworth said despite worrying about reptiles at Alcatraz Island, off the Northern Kimberley coast, his group did manage to catch a few barramundi.

Australia’s North West Tourism chief executive Natasha Mahar said she was pleasantly surprised by the speech.

“I think it’s wonderful publicity that he mentioned the Kimberley as his favourite fishing trip in Australia,” she said.

“We hope to encourage him to visit our beautiful region again soon.”

Hemsworth’s first brush with fame was on Seven’s Home and Away in the early 2000s, before becoming a household name when taking the lead role in 2011 Marvel blockbuster Thor.
