Fashion first marks start of race season

Race-goers were treated to a perfect Saturday afternoon under a cloudless sky for the Broome Turf Club’s first racing round at the weekend.

There was plenty of socialising, with about 3000 people filtering through the gates to see the six-event program, which ranged from a 1100m sprint to a 1300m format, on a pristine track.

MCs Robin Strauss of Divers Tavern and Broome Advertiser’s Ashlie Williamson guided crowds through the club’s first Fashions on the Field event.

The Broome International Airport feature race was a firm favourite for many trainers and punters, offering $16,000 of the total $85,500 prize purse available.

Club chief executive Paul Rossiter said people were well-behaved and the event was an excellent start to the season.

The next meeting is expected to be held on Saturday, June 17.
