When it comes to jobs, Daryl Roberson has no complaints.

His office sits on the pristine sands of Cable Beach and the views are spectacular.

That probably explains why he returned last week with his trusty beach equipment hire business for “about” the 20th consecutive year. Mr Roberson said he could not have wished for a better start to the year with sunny warm weather and a mild off-shore breeze making beach conditions almost perfect.

“It almost feels like the dry season is here; it won’t be long,” he said.

“I have noticed a lot of people getting around and about ... there has been a lot of movement on the beach.”

Mr Roberson said the start of the season was one of his favourite times as an honorary beach stalwart.

“When it is quiet at the beginning of the season, you try and rev up a bit of business and get out there on the paddleboard and show everyone how easy it is,” he said. “You get a few umbrellas out to show off a bit of colour and get excited about the day as you chat with a lot of tourists and the local beach population.”
